I think we can all agree that Albert Einstein was a pretty smart guy and came up with some great ideas and concepts, but his quote above is also great advice to all of us in business. It's a quote that I have printed on my business card and something I embrace in creating new companies and products


A recession is a great opportunity to start a business and go out on your own, and there is an explosion of people doing just that. A huge number of Boomers, who have been thrown out of their corporate lives, think they will now become entrepreneurs and strike out on their own.  They think, "Hey, I spent 20 years in management of that corporation so I can certainly run my own little startup."


But hold on there, newbie. To be a successful entrepreneur, you may first have to retrain your brain. If you spent time at a large company in management, accounting, finance or general data control, you've been living in a left-brain world with left-brain thinking.


In a standard corporate environment, we often get stuck in logical, rational left-brain "linear thinking" following the same thought paths that the industry uses and we recognize as the norm.


That's not a necessarily a bad thing. For a big, stable company, it can be a good thing. It's a logical, secure path that we're comfortable with, but it does not inspire new ideas. You can't steer a giant battle ship on impulse - and you also can't turn one on a dime.


Right versus left is not just in politics.


A small startup is a different world that requires different thinking. In a new small business we begin to look at new and different ways to do our business. We must be creative, impulsive and move quickly to adapt to the constant changes that come with every new day. Your right brain is the creative side and must be activated and running on all cylinders so you don't get stuck on one idea or process.


Luke Mansfield, head of innovation in the London office of branding agency Landor Associates, points out that, "If your business has only one answer, or one definition of innovation, it's time to try something new. You will be amazed at the results."


Embrace the absurd! Many successful inventors, innovators, marketing and business people started out with what others considered an absurd, silly, can't-be-done idea. You know, the light bulb, wind-powered electrical generators, the list goes on throughout history.


I love kids. They are the greatest inventors.  I am always delighted by kids' boundless excitement and enthusiasm for life - and their wide imaginations. They have this uninhibited ability to think the absurd, imagine the undoable openly and without reservations.


But alas, they are then taught the linear thinking in a regimented world and join the rest of the dead heads.


We should never stop asking "What if?" and "Why not?" Be ABSURD, think crazy thoughts, have impossible ideas!


If you have or can capture that childlike absurd enthusiasm, don't let anyone cool you off or calm you down because you, my friend, are headed toward success. Just think, if Al had not thought the absurd, someone would have come up with E=ONICBD (oh never mind, it can't be done).

Grand opening promotions is all about advertising your new company in a high traffic area without having to pay the big bucks for a top advertising agency. Find some way of specifically targeting those who spend the money and do the most shopping for themselves and their families – moms and wives!  That might mean asking for permission to post fliers at local daycares, parks, grocery stores, or schools.  And be sure to remember that this niche market is often very big on a good deal.  Women love a good, honest, coupon.

That's a decent list to get started with.  A blog doesn't have to take up all of your working day but it's an easy way to keep your website fresh, make your website more personal and drive traffic to your site.  It also gives your customers a reason to keep coming back to your site and the more they come back, the more likely they are to buy something from you!

As we get older, we become a little more relaxed about having birthday parties and styling a theme to become a real party.  Generally most of us are a little more financially secure than when we had our 18th or 21st.

A flamboyant menu does not need to cost a fortune, and if guests are staying late into the night it may be a great idea to offer mid-night munchies to guests.

Most businesses have a large number of former leads in their database. These are people or companies that have responded to marketing initiatives in the past, but didn't buy. As a result, they sit there in the database unloved and unremembered.


The fact is, they're a rich source of leads and you probably already know a lot about them. For example, you should know what they responded to. And what happened once they arrived at your site. You may even know why they said 'no' to the last marketing effort.


These leads aren't dead, and it's important to view them as unrealised opportunities. Whatever you were offering wasn't compelling enough at the time. Perhaps it is now? Or perhaps you've since developed a more exciting offer. Either way, I've found 'old' leads are a surprisingly rich source of new business.


Article Marketing:


A topical article will attract a certain type of person. Such a person is able to read (obviously), interested in the topic in question, and willing to actively seek out information about it on the Internet.


No matter what your product or service, you can promote it via article marketing. Of course, the article has to be interesting. That means it can't simply be a pitch for your business. This is lead generation, rather than lead conversion.


The best articles deliver genuinely useful information, and provide a link back to your site for more information. You can (if you wish to) link directly to a landing page designed to pick up where the article left off.


In addition to generating leads directly, an article can also provide SEO benefit via contextual links. This gives you an immediate and an ongoing source of leads. The more articles you write, the better you'll do.


You needn't limit your activity to written articles. Videos posted to sites such as You Tube can also deliver warm leads. In fact, video is an excellent way to demonstrate the benefits of a complex product. It also offers the opportunity to convey emotion far more effectively than words on a screen.


Twitter:


Twitter is a great way to pick up leads. Simply post a 'tweet' about your topic, and link it to a landing page on your web site. Anyone following you on Twitter will see the 'tweet' and can click through if they're interested.


If your post contains useful keywords, it will also be picked up by people searching Twitter for information about that keyword. For example, many of my 'Tweets' deliberately include keywords such as lead generation, online marketing and SEO.


Your purpose is to send people to your site, and you don't get a lot of text to make your case. It's worth writing and rewriting a 'tweet', and make it as compelling as possible. Ideally, the landing page will pick up where the 'tweet' left off.


Problem Solving:


All marketing is essentially an attempt to get paid for solving a problem. One way to generate a lead, is to offer to solve a problem you know your target market has. You then link to a landing page designed to sell the solution. For example, a person who needs to know how to write ad copy (and can't) is likely to respond to an ad like this: Can't write ad copy that sells? I can show you how in just 7 minutes.


Normally, the page being linked to would then pick up where the ad left off, and try to convince the lead s/he really can write powerful sales copy by purchasing the seller's product.


Most people won't believe the seller (and who can blame them). Doubt will creep in, and spoil the deal. I've developed a lead generation technique that overcomes this doubt, and delivers a far higher conversion rate.


My approach is to provide a solution to the problem I offered to solve, right there on the web (free of charge, and without collecting personal contact data). The solution is delivered, and in doing so a bigger problem becomes obvious. One that requires expert advice or help to solve. I offer to provide that help, and ask if they're interested.


If they say yes, I have the warmest leads it's possible to generate.
