Office 2010 suites from Google, Zoho, Adobe, and others and responding

Office 2010 suites from Google, Zoho, Adobe, and others and responding

Microsoft has released a technical preview of Microsoft Office 2010. This is a pre-beta release intended for feedback, as

well as promotion, so it’s not feature-complete and may change before the final release planned for

the first half of 2010.

Nevertheless, it offers a fair guide to what Microsoft is planning for its ubiquitous office suite.

The short summary is ‘more of the same’: more of the controversial Office Ribbon UI, more features

for products that arguably have too many already, and more integration with SharePoint so that

users are drawn deeper into Microsoft’s platform. At the same time, the company is looking perhaps

nervously at web-based Office suites from Google, Zoho, Adobe, and others and responding with MS Office 2010 applications of its own, while

carefully avoiding any suggestion that they might replace the desk-bound versions.

“I wouldn’t give up the full capabilities of my Office applications on my PC,” says Office product

manager Monica Mendoza. “But isn’t it great to know that you can access your Office files from

anywhere, directly in a browser?” Considering the importance of Office to its bottom line, you

would not expect Microsoft so say anything else, but it is a complex message to articulate. The big

themes of were new XML-based document formats, which sparked a ferocious standards war, and the

disappearance of menus in favour of a fat-tabbed toolbar called the Ribbon. Web apps aside, there

is nothing so radical here. Office 2010 feels more like a refinement of the earlier version. The

Ribbon is now extended to Outlook and Publisher. One crumb of comfort for Ribbon-haters: a

“customise the Ribbon” option has appeared, letting you add and remove tabs, groups, and individual

commands.

As for Open XML, it’s notable that Microsoft neglects to mention it at all in its Reviewer’s Guide,

even though this is supposedly the release that will fully implement ISO/IEC 29500. It is odd how

this has gone from a cause to campaign for, to not-worth-mentioning in just over a year. To be

fair, few users ever cared about XML formats themselves: it is only when documents get scrambled or

fail to open that such things become important. So what is new here? 64-bit versions for a start.

They’re now an option throughout. The most obvious use is gigabyte-size Excel spreadsheets, though

working with any large document should now be easier. Excel also gets a new single-cell chart type

called a Sparkline and a new Slicer tool for filtering data. Some features turn up throughout the

product.

The Office Button – really a file menu, and one which some new users find hard to discover

inBackstage view, combining file, preview, and document options into one full-window dialog. It

sounds odd, but it works well. Paste Preview is another new feature, showing an instant preview of

Paste actions.

Ideal for product reviewers, a screenshot button lets you insert an image of any open window into

the current document. Several Office applications now support simultaneous multi-user editing,

provided the document is hosted on SharePoint or Windows Live. For more information or buy office

SharePoint Server 2010 Business Connectivity Services

SharePoint Server 2010 Business Connectivity Services

You have a portal? Want to integrate some external data into your portal in a meaningful way? Nothing to worry! Here's Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007's Business Data Catalog (BDC) to facilitate this exact scenario. Microsoft's business data catalog makes it easy to surface external data inside a portal experience. For instance, you can create an XML definition file that defines the mapping between SharePoint and your external data so that it can be rendered in a Web Part, used as a column within a list, and even integrated into search.

Though BDC in MOSS 2007 enabled connectivity to external systems, it was difficult to create solutions due to lack of a designer. Moreover, though BDC made it relatively easy to create read-only solutions that display data in the Business Data List Web Part, it was not so simple to create a solution that enabled users to make changes and write that data back to the external store.

Consequently, Business Connectivity Services in SharePoint Server 2010 and SharePoint Foundation 2010 came into picture as a savior! Business Connectivity Services is all about connecting to external data. Business Connectivity Services enhances the capabilities of SharePoint Server with out-of-box features, services, and tools that streamline development of solutions with deep integration of external data and services. Business Connectivity Services is build upon its BDC predecessor in the key areas of presentation, connectivity, tooling and lifecycle management. In SharePoint 2010, it's easy to create an external content type with SharePoint Designer, create an external list in SharePoint's Web user interface, and take the list offline into Outlook as a set of contacts. Also, you can make updates to contacts in Outlook that will cause the data in the external system to update as well.

Key Components that comprises Business Connectivity Services include the following:

o BDC Metadata Store – The BDC Metadata Store provides storage for a collection of external content types, each of which describes how to connect to the external store. The Metadata Store acts as part of the services layer. External content types are a fundamental building block of business connectivity services
o BDC Server Runtime – The BDC Server Runtime understands how to reach into the back-end store and connect to data based on the external content types defined within the content type store. It's important to note the new usage of the acronym BDC to refer to the set of services that provides connectivity that is a component of business connectivity services
o Security – Business Connectivity Services provide integration with the Secure Store Service (SSS), as well as enable your own security model
o Solution Packaging – Solutions built with Business Connectivity Services can be packaged as a Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO) package to be delivered to a rich client, including SharePoint Workspace, Outlook and Word. Business connectivity services also exposes APIs to extend solution packaging to target additional clients
o Out of Box UI – Business Connectivity Services carry forward the ability to display external data through a Web Part UI and provides deeper integration through the addition of external lists.
o BDC Client Runtime – A symmetrical runtime is provided for client and server, enabling you to take solutions offline with a client-side cache and to connect and push changes back to the server in a consistent manner. Use of the BDC Client Runtime enables offline operations, interacting with the external data cache.
o Design Tools – SharePoint Designer provides a wealth of out-of-box functionality for creating business connectivity services solutions, including the ability to define external content types and external lists, and to define InfoPath forms to surface the data to create simple solutions. Visual Studio provides the ability for the professional developer to extend those capabilities to create advanced solutions while leveraging the existing framework.

All in all, you would have a great experience using this SharePoint family of products. Also, take advantage of free SharePoint templates or web parts included along with these products.

Sharepoint 2010 Ribbon Menu

Sharepoint 2010 Ribbon Menu

SharePoint Server 2010 is the trending topic these days. And when talking about SharePoint 2010, how can I miss to mention one of the most valuable interface changes provided in it, i.e., the new Ribbon Menu. SharePoint Ribbon Menu is a contextual interface that allows users to execute any action related to ribbon controls depending upon the context the user is currently dealing with. Simply put, Ribbon Menu helps to add or replace buttons, groups, tabs or even the whole ribbon. You also remove the custom button from the ribbon. However¸ the designers and web developers, who until now were quite comfortable with designing master pages for SharePoint Server, are somewhat puzzled now with this thing called Ribbon Menu in the middle of their page. But there's nothing to get confused about because the SharePoint 2010 API allows developers to extend and customize the ribbon using SharePoint features on site/site collection level.

There are several types of controls which can be deployed to SharePoint Ribbon, which are as follows:

· Button

· CheckBox

· DropDown

· FlyoutAnchor

· ToggleButton

The above given controls can be collected for usability purposes to containers such as Group and Tab. Consequently, it is possible to add controls with custom functionality not only to existing containers, but deploy new tabs and groups, and then add necessary controls to them. However, any ribbon customization should be mounted within XML in-feature declaration.

If you have deployed some ribbon customization XML and later have to provide some changes into it then it might be necessary to change the Feature ID for SharePoint feature where your customization belongs. For simple modifications (i.e. changing button titles, image URLs, etc.) this is not necessary, but if you change the Feature ID, every time you change anything in XML, it might save a lot of time and effort.

To conclude, the Ribbon is a new concept with SharePoint Server 2010 and SharePoint Foundation 2010, and another advance over Microsoft Office SharePoint server.  Also do not forget the free SharePoint web parts or templates that come with SharePoint.

Why Homeowners Should Use Licensed Agency When Renting Out Their Home For 2010 Olympics

Why Homeowners Should Use Licensed Agency When Renting Out Their Home For 2010 Olympics

If you have a home in or near Vancouver, Canada, then you have an opportunity to make a considerable profit by renting your home as 2010 Olympic accommodation. There is a little more to it than just putting an ad online, and there are few things to think about. To find a good renter and to ensure that the whole rental process goes smoothly consider services of a licensed rental agency.

There will be lots of home owners looking to rent their properties out as 2010 Olympic accommodation, maybe even your friends and neighbors. This means that you will have a lot of competition to find a renter. A licensed agency can give you a huge advantage in this department because they have a much better ability to advertise. Remember that potential renters are not local. They are likely to be coming from foreign countries. They will not be familiar with the area and will be much more likely to use and trust a licensed agency. The professionals will know how and where to market to international clients. They already have professional websites established and a reputation that can be checked. It would be very hard for you compete with that power and authority as an individual.

Using a licensed rental agency means that you will pay a commission, but it also means that you can get a higher price for your 2010 Olympic accommodations. A licensed property rental agency will attract a higher caliber of clientele who will be willing to pay a premium to ensure that they are getting what they are expecting and what they are paying for. This means that working though a licensed agency would be beneficial for both the home owner and the renter.

The licensed rental agency will be sure to screen the guests. This is critical since you will be turning over your home to strangers. You want to make sure that they are the type of people who will be respectful and not cause damage to the property. It is also important if you have stipulations about no smoking or no pets. There is no guarantee that nothing bad will happen to your property, but screening the clients will significantly reduce the odds.

Another benefit is that the agency will also ensure that all the proper rental agreements are taken care of. They will also handle the collection of the deposit and all other money transactions for your 2010 rental accommodation. This means that you can be rest assured that you are protected in case anything goes wrong. It also makes it easier on you as you do not have to deal with collecting money from the clients or returning the deposit. That is all handled for you by the rental agency. So you never actually have worry about scams that often occur with money transactions.

Before you hire an agency to manage your 2010 rental property, be sure to ask for their license number and check with licensing bureau if they really exist.

Renting your house as 2010 Olympic accommodation is a great way to make money, but be sure to use a licensed agency to ensure that the experience is a positive one for both you and the renter. You can make more money and have less risk. You will be glad you did.

Web promotion is all about acquiring hyperlinks and traffic to websites. It is possible to develop 1 million quality websites but with no correct internet promotion, you will by no means see money coming in.Click Right here To Grab Your Copy

Most internet promotion techniques have one factor in widespread - trying to rank large in search engines like google outcomes. In the outdated fashion days, I loved to submit my websites to countless website link directories. It labored like magic until the search engines transformed their algorithms.

Then the next big issue was Blog page and Ping. It was one of the most powerful web promotion program. I could easily get my pages indexed in a few hrs and rank higher in search engines.

But as soon as once more, the search engines saw this coming and as a result it is now really challenging to rank one's sites on search engines, according to Blog page and Ping.

Article submission is 1 with the techniques I used. Nevertheless, although it really is nonetheless a extremely successful traffic creating tactic, it is also quite time consuming.

I spent thousands on Search engine optimization resources as well as hired an Search engine optimization expert. I invested hours doing Search engine optimization on-site and off-site. I did see some visitors now and then but the figures had been not something i'm happy with.Click Right here To Grab Your Copy

I was at the mercy of the search engines like google and was paying more time and cash than I could earn!

I was desperate for a real visitors producing solution. I needed to be able to get traffic quick! To my luck, I discovered the extremely answer to my internet promotion discomfort.

You may well have heard all of the buzz about the term Social Bookmarking.

What is Social Bookmarking & Why is it so effective and different from other web promotion tactics?

Social Bookmarking sites are basically websites that categorize and store 'bookmark links' (hyperlinks which take one to a specific website). Millions of visitors flood these Social Bookmarking sites to search for information.

So the idea of bookmarking is to post hyperlinks back to your internet page from these Social Bookmarking internet sites. You need to specify some keywords (we call them TAGS) which categorize your bookmark.

This allows others to search and also vote for your bookmark. Social Bookmarking is in a league of its own because of its capacity to generate traffic by sharing hyperlinks.

7 Search Engines That Stand Out In 2010

7 Search Engines That Stand Out In 2010
With Google holding its position as king of search, and with Google intending to hold on to that position, there is in the shadows of the Internet thousands of alternative search engines fighting to get a piece of the lucrative marketplace for Internet search.

The English language market for search is dominated by a few big behemoths. According to a report by comScore the market in October 2009 was dominated by Google (65.4%), Yahoo (18.0%), Microsoft (9.9%), Ask (3.9%) and AOL (2.9%), followed by MapQuest, eBay, craigslist, Fox, MySpace, Facebook and Amazon.

With the search market valued at $ 300 Billion that makes every single 1% worth $ 3 Billion when selling the company and you would do well by taking just a 0.1% slice of that cake. The number of start up search engines is only going to increase with everyone wanting a slice of the market.

This is the top 7 search engines that the 2010 blog headlines are likely to gossip around. New or old, all of them have in common that they deliver good search results and they have been innovating in 2009.

Cuil

With two ex Googlers, Anna Patterson and Russell Power, in the management and by claiming to be the worlds biggest search engine Cuil has a lot to deliver.

Overloaded servers that generated low quality search results hampered the initial 2008 launch giving Cuil a lot of negative media attention but of you try a search today you'll find the search results are really good and there is an explore by category function that is among the best I've seen.

DuckDuckGo

The search engine with the silly name and a cute interface combines Yahoo BOSS, Wikipedia and it's own crawler DuckDuckBot to create both hard information in a Zero-click information box, categories to further refine searches and of course the actual search results.

DuckDuckGo was launched in 2008 by Gabriel Weinberg and is a private venture that has been growing steadily during 2009. I think this search engine has a clear niche carved out for itself, watch out for what they do in 2010

Spezify

A totally cool search engine, Spezify. It renders the search results as newspaper clippings spread out on the screen with a mix of photos and quotes from web pages. Instead of clicking to and from between websites to decide which one provides you a solution you can read the brief clippings and get a decent enough overview that you often can choose the right website on the first or second try.

Spezify is very handy tool for brainstorming. Just type in any keyword and you'll get a ton of ideas for a new article or blog post.

Secret Search Engine Labs

This is a search engine that does not try to rank sites the same way as the big three, G-Y-B. As Google gives priority to mature and large sites, many new, small and relevant sites are hard to find in their search results. Secret Search Engine Labs ranks sites based on page contents and links using their trademark CashRank algorithm to filter out questionable content.

Secret Search Engine Labs was initiated in 2007 by Simon Byholm, a software engineer and entrepreneur from Finland, and in addition to relevant and novel search results it aims to provide tools and info for webmasters on how webpages are ranked.

Bing

Bing is a re-branded Microsoft's Live Search that was previously MSN Search. With a forceful marketing campaign Microsoft has managed to grab almost 10% of the marketplace for search. The media attention surrounding the re-launch has fueled innovation adding new functions like the daily changing background photo, suggested topics and popularity trends.

With Microsoft working fiercely to increase Bing's market share you need to watch them closely during 2010.

Blekko

With a management team with backgrounds Topix, Google, AOL and Netscape Search this start-up search engine is as secretive as Google about what they will do and when.

We are still waiting for Blekkos official launch. It was promised for the end of 2009 though so you can expect it to make some serious news in 2010. We can only hope it's exciting news.

Monitter

Monitter is not a traditional search engine but a real-time Twitter search where you can keep an eye on several keywords and see all tweets containing those keywords in real time as they are tweeted. When you have a need to monitor you niche or area of expertise or if you just want to keep an eye on the conversation this is a neat tool.

What About The Rest?

Chances are you know that Google is innovating and there is no doubt they will make some noise in 2010. Wolfram Alpha is fascinating as it is the only major search engine that makes the results from data.

There's a horde of social, real time or just odd search engines starting up and there's no telling if one of them develops into the next Twitter and grabs it's share of the search market. You will find info on most of them in this list of search engines, in this other search engine list or on AltSearchengines.com a blog that reviews just about every new search engine launched.

After many years of Google - Yahoo - Microsoft rule there is now signs of radical changes to the search landscape. There's new technology sprouting like mushrooms in every corner of the Net. New search engines using social networks, visual presentation, new semantic algorithms and real-time results to stand out from the crown are popping up everywhere. The result, even if we don't get a new top three, is that the ruling behemoths will have to keep innovating to keep up with the crowd and in the end we'll get a better search experience.

Each year, a list of the World Heritage sites is unveiled by the United Nations. Over the past 28 years, the UNESCO has identified more than 180 natural wonders across 77 countries.
